Tight-fitting pedal pushers or capri pants were popular leisure wear and jeans which in the s were called dungarees were becoming acceptable after people saw a photo of Marilyn Monroe wearing a pair. Young men wore a shirt, tie and sharply pressed slacks. If you were the rebellious type, however, you wore dark clothes all the time, refused to iron anything and were just generally looking rough on purpose.

But clothing choices were quite a bit different for informal school dances. Many teen girls preferred full skirts, some with 4-inch hems. These skirts were often made of wool felt fabric in bright colors, including the world famous poodle skirt.

The s circle skirts were worn with tucked-in, tight fitting blouses. It was usually tied together with a wide belt, flat-heeled shoes and bobby socks or anklets. For the younger boys sport suits and dressy outfits resembled miniature versions of what a father might wear in casual or formal settings. Teenage girls could go for a more sophisticated look with two piece ensembles, blazer jackets, and slimmer skirt shapes. Wool coats in various styles were also popular for winter weather and a toggle parka was the pinnacle of fashion. Argyle pattern cardigans and varying styles of plaid shirts were also popular. Suits, skirts, tops and jackets in wool and rayon were great for everyday wear, while pleated or quilted circle skirt jumpers were perfect for the holidays.

Cotton knit sweaters with v-necks or fun hoods were great for casual wear and looked best in fun and colorful stripes. Striped pullovers and cardigans gained more popularity and the standard denim look with flannel plaid accents and shirts were a casual stand-by.
